Hai Yan, M.D. Ph.D., has research interests that center around systematic oncogenomic profiling and functional genomic studies for malignant glioma.

He is an internationally recognized expert in cancer genomics known for his work in establishing a genetic basis for brain cancer. His research has been transformational, as he has identified the genetic signatures of various types of gliomas, including IDH1, IDH2, ATRX, TERT, and PPM1D mutations, with clear translational implications for opportunities to improve diagnosis and treatment. He has been instrumental in building a genomic database of a variety of cancers, and his work has revolutionized the understanding of the genetic foundations of cancer.

Hai Yan received an M.D. from the Beijing University Health Science Center in 1991 and a Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology from Columbia University in 1996. He was a postdoctoral fellow in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at the Johns Hopkins University from 1997 to 2002, under the tutelage of Drs. Bert Vogelstein and Ken Kinzler.

Hai Yan was recruited to Duke and joined the faculty of the Department of Pathology as an assistant professor in 2003. Since his arrival at Duke, he has served as an investigator at the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation Institute.

Hai Yan is a former Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation Scholar and American Cancer Society Research Scholar. He was the recipient of the Peter A. Steck Young Investigator's Award in 2005, the James S. McDonnell Foundation Research Award in 2011, the V Foundation and Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure Research Award in 2011, and the AACR Team Science Award in 2014.'
